About Ladies of Charity USA Indianapolis
Our Mission
At Ladies of Charity USA Indianapolis, our mission is to improve the lives of those in need by providing essential services and support to our communities. We believe that everyone deserves access to basic necessities such as food, shelter, and healthcare.
MOTTO
To serve rather than be served in humility, simplicity, and charity.
Founded in 1617 by St. Vincent de Paul, patron of all charity, the Ladies of Charity responded to the needs of the poor in seventeenth century France. In 1625 Louise de Marillac joined St. Vincent de Paul in supporting the Ladies of Charity, prior to the founding of the Daughters of Charity in 1633. They went quietly about their tasks, seeking no recognition, satisfied with the knowledge that they were serving Christ in the person of the poor. The Ladies of Charity, since their origin, have possessed the charism of their founder daily prayer and personal service to the poor. That same Vincentian spirit characterizes the Association today.
Our History
The International Association of Charities (AIC) is the governing body of all Ladies of Charity associations. The Ladies of Charity, USA (LCUSA) was founded in St. Louis in 1857 by Catherine Harkins. The Ladies of Charity, Indianapolis, Inc. was founded in 1945 and continued until the early 1980’s. The Ladies of Charity, Indianapolis, Inc. was reestablished in 2012 as an association within the national organization.
